GX PILLOWS EDITORIAL COPIES

GX PILLOWS EDITORIAL COPIES

INTRODUCTION TO BRIEF

The brief centred on designing a print advertising campaign for GX Pillows, promoting exclusive discounts of 20% and 30% on the brand’s patented comfort‑enhancing pillows. The campaign was intended for placement in newspapers and magazines, targeting an audience primarily aged 50 and above - individuals most likely to benefit from the advanced support and sleep technology these products offer. The concept was rooted in a compelling real‑world story: when Georgia Miles was recovering from a life‑threatening accident, her father, Alexander, searched tirelessly for a pillow that could provide lasting comfort through the night. His determination led to the creation of GX Pillows, a breakthrough in sleep innovation that continues to help those with similar conditions. The brief challenged me to translate this emotional narrative into visually persuasive editorial layouts that balanced empathy, credibility and commercial appeal, using typography, composition and imagery to connect with readers on both a personal and practical level.

BRIEFING THE PROBLEM

This project presented several key challenges that shaped the creative direction and communication strategy. The first was establishing how GX Pillows could stand apart from other well‑known competitors in the sleep and comfort market - positioning the brand as both credible and distinctive without relying on exaggerated claims.

The second challenge involved appealing to the target audience, primarily readers aged 50 and above, in a way that felt trustworthy and empathetic rather than overly promotional. It was essential to communicate the product’s benefits clearly while maintaining authenticity and restraint, ensuring the tone aligned with the audience’s expectations and lifestyle.

Finally, the editorial layouts needed to include all necessary information - product details, discount offers, and the emotional backstory, without overwhelming the reader or cluttering the composition. Balancing clarity, hierarchy and visual breathing space became central to solving these problems, guiding the design process toward a refined, accessible and persuasive outcome.

PROCESS AND TOOLS

To develop the GX Pillows editorial campaign, I worked primarily in Adobe InDesign, constructing a series of print‑ready layouts that combined product imagery, lifestyle photography and brand‑led visual elements. The creative assets included photographs of the pillows themselves, shots of models representing the target demographic, and images of the founder to reinforce authenticity and trust. GX’s signature purple served as the foundation of the colour palette, chosen for its calming, sleep‑related associations, while a complementary red introduced contrast and emphasis for key messaging such as discounts and product benefits. I also explored seasonal colour variations, incorporating orange and maroon  to create alternative versions of the layouts that could be utilised as alternatives throughout the year.

A major part of the process involved tailoring the visual style to different audiences and publications. For example, layouts aimed at women in Woman & Home leaned into softer compositions and more emotive storytelling, while creatives for The People’s Friend adopted a clearer, more practical tone suited to male readers. Newspaper placements required a balanced, neutral approach that communicated information quickly and effectively. Throughout the project, I liaised closely with my director and the GX client team, collaborating on copywriting that conveyed the origin story of the pillows and articulated their sleep‑supporting benefits without overpromising. This iterative process of design refinement, audience consideration and narrative development ensured that every creative felt aligned with the brand, the brief and the needs of the readers.

OUTCOME

The final editorial copies successfully communicated both the origin story of GX Pillows and the practical benefits they offer, presenting the brand as trustworthy, empathetic and medically credible. Each layout integrated unique discount codes tailored to the publication in which the advert appeared, ensuring that readers of Woman & Home, The People’s Friend, and various national newspapers received a code directly linked to their chosen title. These codes were strategically placed throughout the designs, embedded within the body copy, displayed prominently in call‑out sections, included as scannable QR codes that led readers straight to a pre‑applied discount landing page, and printed as traditional coupons for older audiences who prefer offline redemption methods. This multi‑format approach strengthened accessibility and maximised response rates across different reader groups.

Half Page Copies

The use of publication‑specific codes also enabled GX to track performance with precision, providing clear data on which creatives generated the highest engagement and conversions - an essential component of direct response advertising. Both full‑page and half‑page versions were produced to accommodate varying media bookings, with half‑page layouts carefully refined to retain all essential information without feeling compressed or visually compromised. The campaign delivered measurable impact: the editorial copies significantly boosted sales, increased customer trust, and ultimately led GX to invest more heavily in press advertising as a core marketing channel.

Every creative reinforced the brand’s credibility through carefully selected testimonials, including endorsements from Harley Street consultant Deane Halfpenny and actress Rula Lenska, whose voices added authority and relatability, and extra testimonials from happy customers further the layer of trust. Together, the final outcomes formed a cohesive, persuasive suite of editorial designs that told the GX Pillows story with clarity, emotional resonance and commercial effectiveness.

All copies are regularly resized and updated with fresh discount codes when used in new bookings.
