SULLIVAN RETIREMENT RESIDENCE EDITORIAL COPY

INTRODUCTION TO BRIEF

The brief for this project was to create an editorial advertisement introducing Sullivan Retirement Residence, a premium retirement resort located in Cambodia, to individuals approaching their retirement years. The aim was to showcase the resort as an aspirational yet attainable destination - a place where retirees could enjoy their “golden years” in a beautiful, serene and well‑supported environment. The copy needed to highlight the full offering: the stunning residential facilities, the on‑site amenities, the curated activities, and the lifestyle benefits that set Sullivan apart from traditional retirement options.

The editorial piece had to communicate both the emotional and practical appeal of relocating abroad for retirement. This meant presenting Sullivan not just as a residence, but as a complete package - a luxurious Asian retreat designed to provide comfort, community and enrichment. The brief emphasised encouraging readers to imagine themselves taking the leap, exploring a new chapter of life in a resort that blends high‑quality living with tropical surroundings and exceptional care.

BRIEFING THE PROBLEM

The core challenge of this project was finding the right balance between luxury positioning and approachability. The copy needed to feel undeniably classy and opulent - one hint of cheapness or over‑selling would immediately undermine the resort’s premium identity. At the same time, the tone had to remain warm, grounded and welcoming, ensuring potential residents felt that Sullivan Retirement Residence was not only aspirational but genuinely attainable.

Another key problem to solve was the emotional weight of the decision itself. Retiring abroad is a significant life step, and the editorial piece had to reassure readers that choosing Sullivan would be a decision they wouldn’t regret. This meant presenting the resort as both a luxurious escape and a dependable, supportive environment. The messaging needed to gently address the fears and hesitations that come with relocating overseas, while confidently highlighting the comfort, community and enrichment the resort offers.

Ultimately, the challenge was to craft a narrative that was elegant without being distant, reassuring without being sentimental, and persuasive without being forceful - a delicate balance that would help readers envision their golden years in a place that feels both extraordinary and deeply inviting.

PROCESS AND TOOLS

I created the Sullivan Retirement Residence editorial page in Adobe InDesign, developing a layout that captured both the opulence and warmth central to the brand’s identity. Working closely with my director and the client team at Sullivan, I refined the copy to tell a compelling story - one that blended luxury‑lifestyle aspirations with the reassurance and comfort potential residents need when considering a major life transition like retiring abroad. This collaboration ensured the messaging felt elegant, trustworthy and emotionally resonant.

The visual direction was shaped around the resort’s strongest asset: its breathtaking location and facilities. I incorporated beautiful, high‑quality imagery of the residence, landscapes and amenities - the true “money shots” that allow readers to imagine themselves living in such a serene, tropical environment. These visuals became the anchor of the layout, providing an immediate sense of escapism and reinforcing the premium nature of the offering.

Colour played a crucial role in establishing tone. Gold was chosen as the focal accent throughout the design, referencing richness, celebration and the idea of “golden years.” Used sparingly and tastefully, it added a sense of prestige without overwhelming the page or feeling gaudy. This gold detailing helped elevate the editorial piece, aligning it with luxury travel and high‑end lifestyle publications while still maintaining a welcoming, down‑to‑earth feel.

OUTCOME

The final editorial page successfully delivered a polished, aspirational and reassuring introduction to Sullivan Retirement Residence, showcasing the full richness of the resort while speaking directly to the hopes and hesitations of potential residents. The copy was crafted from the point of view of someone considering a major life transition, intentionally shaped to reflect what a reader in that position would want to know - the beauty of the surroundings, the quality of the facilities, the lifestyle benefits, and the confidence that they would be making an exciting, rewarding choice.

Full Page

The layout combined beautiful, immersive imagery of the Cambodian resort with detailed, informative copy that highlighted every key feature: the accommodation, the amenities, the activities, the community and the overall experience of living abroad in a luxurious, well‑supported environment. These visuals acted as the emotional anchor of the piece, allowing readers to picture themselves in the space and feel the opulence that defines Sullivan’s offering.

Gold accents reinforced the sense of richness and “golden years” symbolism, helping the editorial feel premium without tipping into excess. The tone remained warm and welcoming throughout, ensuring that while the resort was presented as high‑end, it never felt intimidating or out of reach.

Overall, the outcome was a refined, persuasive editorial page that showcased Sullivan Retirement Residence at its most compelling - a piece designed to inspire confidence, spark imagination and gently encourage readers to take the important step toward a luxurious retirement abroad.
